The Swanston Street proposal was produced by the Truscott Design Circle with the intention of helping people ‘make sense’ of inner-city Melbourne. A trip along Swanston Street is like taking a quick tour of the city.

The project sought to:

  • assist people in navigating Swanston Street;
  • invite people to experience Melbourne’s diversity;
  • entice people to take detours and explore the streets and laneways which run from Swanston Street;
  • invite people into the outdoor ‘rooms’ that sit along Swanston Street (e.g. City Square) to enable relief and the pleasure of watching passers-by;
  • make a journey safe and pleasant, catering for pedestrians, cyclists, trams and other users; and
  • represent Melbourne’s uniqueness and desire to be seen as a creative city.
